Dr. Stephen Jones wants to turn Western Washington into a premier area for growing organic wheat, rye, barley, oats, and hops. He and his team at the WSU Agricultural Research Station in Mt. Vernon, Washington plan to do this by breeding varieties of these grains adapted to the short growing season and wet climate of the Puget Sound region.
